Gresford Cricket Club

Sean Richards has started the season well with 4 wickets in his first two games

Chris Ellwood struck a fine 57

May 8th 1sts V Llandudno 2nds Travelling to Gresford after early rain skipper Matt Lambe lost the toss and was invited to bat.

Losing two early partners Lambe was forced to dig in as Llandudno struggled with the pace of the wicket. He found support from Laurence Clair who scored 19, Lambe was bowled by John Bell on reaching 50 having battled for 2 hours. Things looked dire at 92 for 6 but the Tudno tail wagged and brothers Jack Thornton with 14 and Tom Thornton 12 helped as did Lewis Pike back from his basic training in the army who hit 15. Llandudno were bowled out for 149 in the 51st over.

Pick of the Gresford bowlers was Sean Richards with 4 for 28 off his 13 overs, support came from skipper Chris Elwood with 2 for 25 and veteran John Bell with 2 for 39.

Early success after tea came as the first wicket fell at 6, the sun broke through for a while and Joe Benson hit a quick fire 26 before being well caught on the boundary by Lewis Jones off the bowling of Luke Regan. Veteran John Bell batted through the Gresford innings for two and a half hours finishing 56 not out. Gresford nerves were frayed as wickets fell to the Tudno spin attack but Bell hit the winning runs in the 46th over with Gresford winning out on 152 for 8.Scorecard

2nds played away at Corus where they won with five balls to spare. Put into bat by the visitors Corus posted 124 all out with J. Bunkell taking 4-27 off 10.4 overs & R. Benson 3-29 off 8 overs for Gresford. In response the visitors scored 125-7 with N. Clare 29 & G. Bell 27 top scoring for Gresford. A good win with a very young team! Scorecard

Perry with 4 wickets, and Jack Bunkell with a catch, a run out and a wicket. May 15th. 1st team v Bethesda (A)  The most satisfying win of the season so far. Bethesda opted to bat first to post 215 for 4 declared off 45 overs. 23rd May—1st XI vs. Rhewl

On the hottest day of the year and with the best wk of the year so far everybody agreed with Chris`s decision to field first! He was right of course as excellent bowling limited the visitors to just 139 (off 50 overs)......Chris E 5 for 33 the highlight. Alex Ellwood (79no) and John Bell (53no) replied with an opening stand of 139 in just 23 overs. Scorecard

Steve Griffin’s side restricted the hosts Jack Bunkell following up last weeks impressive spell at Bethesda with an equally impressive 3-34 off 11 overs this time out. Gareth Bell, Dev Basu and Ross Willets each taking two wickets. A second successive century opening stand from Griffin (64) and Weaver (45) set a solid foundation for the run chase as Bell Jr. and new boy Dev see Gresford home with 2 balls to spare. Scorecard

Ollie Morris (above) kept well again as Gresford’s tight bowling restricted Rhewl to just 139.

June

June 1st— Red Lion Handbridge vs Midweek XI—An “Interesting” game to say the least. A game which started with a chair as the non strikers stumps ended with Gresford trying to rush through their overs, not due to a slow over rate...but due to the car park shutting at 9pm! On the field, opener Josh Knowles anchored the innings with a patient 34 not out, Rory Benson smashed a quick 36 and Ollie Morris chipped in with 25 in setting a target of 130. In reply Perry and Bell Jr. got two wickets each, but the star of the show was Bunkell (5 fer) who polished off the tail in quick time. 3 wins from 3. Scorecard

John Bell and Gareth Rowland both reached their 50`s at about the same time, Rowland then went onto 79no scoring 30 runs off his last 10 deliveries. Bell finished on 53no. 5th win and top of the league! Scorecard

June 6th Vs Knockin (A) - Heavy rain almost saw this one abandoned, openers Gareth Bell and Cameron Murdoch were very pleased the game went ahead as they both retired on 50, setting Gresford well on their way in posting 220/5 off 25 overs, James Williams, Matt Daulby and George Morris also contributing. In reply the hosts never got going, Jack Bunkell removing the top order and a combination the occasional “bowling” of Ian Baker and the occasional “keeping” of son David accounted for the oppositions top scorer via a stumping. Scorecard

June 10th Midweek Vs Carmel (A) A low scoring thriller. Gresford triumph in their toughest midweek fixture so far. Batting first the visitors lost Alex Ellwood, Arthur Thomas and Ollie Morris in quick succession. Bensons, Joe and Neil rebuilt to reach a modest score of 81/7 off 20 overs. Tight Bowling from Paddy Richards, Jack Bunkell and Gareth Bell meant that the hosts were stopped 3 runs short of the target. An excellent fielding display with just 10 players! Scorecard

1st vs Marchweil (A)

On an interesting wk M`weil struggled to 134 all out. Paddy Richards taking 4 wks in his best spell of the season. Craig Morse`s 3 catches and entertaining banter in th field deserve mention. In reply a quick start by Bell (26) , Ellwood (22) and Rowland (20) took G`ford to 63 for 3, wks then fell quickly but good positive batting from Dev Basu and particularly Sean Richards (44no) enabled a 3 wk win. Scorecard

Midweek Vs. Asian XI...A first loss of the season by 6 runs. Asian XI bludgeon their way to 144 and Gresford look well up with the run rate until they lose Alex (49) and Chris (26) in quick succession. A good effort with the bat but fielding must improve! Scorecard

1sts vs Bersham (H)

Once again Skipper Ellwood win toss on a hot suuny day, with a fast wk available and opts to field! Bersham eventually reach 201 for 6 with 95 coming off the last 10 overs. Bell`s figs of 13 overs for 10 runs for 4 wks contrasted the figures of the other bowlers. In reply the home side were reduced to 3 wks for just 5 runs. Arthur Thomas got G `ford going with a quickfire 35. A 150 partner ship of 150 between Bell (73no) & Chris Ellwood (75no) took G`ford to a 6 wk victory. Captains decision correct again! Scorecard

3rd July

1sts v Pwllheli (H)

Batting first for the first time since May 1st, Gresford made an impressive looking 222-9. John Bell anchored the innings with a well crafted 92. However wickets tumbled around him in the last ten overs of the innings in the pursuit of quick runs. Cam Murdoch on his first team debut looked right at home hitting 43 in quick time. In reply the Gresford openers made early inroads dismissing 3 of the top 4 batsmen for a combined total of 6. However it was the one remaining top 4 batsman that proved the match winner, Nadeem Rehman making 99 not out (taking his season tally past 600 runs) well supported by Hughes (80) as Pwllheli win by 4 wickets. An off day in the field, as catches went down. Gresford find themselves 4th with Llay the visitors for the derby match next week. Scorecard

2nds v Connahs Quay (A)

The 2nds took a side very thin on bowling to top of the table Connahs Quay. Choosing to bat first the hosts hit 262-9, having been 60 without loss then 80odd for 5. Jimmy Williams (very sore on Sunday morning) rolled back the years with 5 for 75. Nicky Clare and Ian Weaver also shared 4 wickets. In reply, only openers Weaver and Griffin reached double figures as opening bowlers Davies and Bennett share ten wickets. Despite the defeat Gresford still remain 4th. Scorecard

Friendly v Marchwiel (A)

The combination of Nelson Hughes (3-16) and Fraser Murdoch (3-3) help restrict M’wiel to 146. notable mentions to Ross Breese and Paul Jones bowling well in there first game for many years! In reply Jack Bunkell scored 50 retired, Fraser Murdoch getting out for 24 with 1 run needed playing a reverse sweep! Scorecard

10th July

1sts v Llay (H)

A third successive defeat. Llay raced to 70 for 0 off just 15 overs, but the home side felt that the taget of 195 was well within reach ( Gareth Rowland`s 4 wks with two excellent catches from Matt Cree). In reply from 94 for 1 (Bell & Rowland reaching 40), G`ford slumped to 94 for 6. Skipper Ellwood (32) and Cam Murdoch (26) tried to rescue the cause , but G`ford were eventually all out for a disappointing 163. Scorecard

Midweek XI v Maeshafn lost to the weather.

Gareth Rowland—Success with bat and ball against Llay.

17th July

1sts v Northop (A) A losing draw! After asking Northop to bat, G`ford bowled and fielded well but Northop still went on to reach 220 for 6 off 52 overs. Although Alex Ellwood, Gareth Rowland and Matty Cree batted well to reach 30 ish no batsman could go on to threaten the homesides total. A last wk 5 over stand between Ollie Morris (solid defence) and Sean Richards (flashing defence) ensured the draw. Scorecard

2nds v Bodedern (H) The seconds hosted high flying Bodedern who lived up to the 2nd place position in the table. Gresford made it to 152 for 9 having been in trouble at 97/7 largely thanks to the contributions of Nicky Clare 25, James Williams 21, Gareth Bell 33 and a quick fire 29 not out from Matt Daulby. In reply Bodedern reached their target in just 32 overs thanks to an opening partnership of 72. Jack Bunkell and Nicky Clare with the most economical figures for the hosts. Scorecard

Sunday friendly vs. Knockin and the next two midweek matches fell victim to the rain.

24th July 1sts v Llandudno 2nds (A)

Gresford perhaps lost this game in the opening 20 overs of the match, Llandudno’s opening partnership of 78 between Williams and Lambe was the difference between the two sides. However, a few close appeals including one for a caught behind turned down as well as flooring three catches did not help Gresford’s cause. Drinks saw the hosts collapse from 78/0 to 79/4 with the introduction of Arthur Thomas (2/18) and Matty Cree (3/15). The tail was cleaned up to leave Llandudno 134 all out. A “chase-able” score. In reply Gresford slumped to 75 all out, with only three players reaching double figures. A bad day at the office, skipper Ellwood will want a much improved fielding and batting display next week at home to Bethesda! Scorecard

2nds v Corus (H) Better news came from clappers lane as the 2nds got back to winning ways. In a match reduced to 35 overs a side Gresford posted an impressive 189-3. Steve Griffin almost getting Gresfords first century of the season with a powerful 90 not out, he was well supported in a substantial 2nd wicket partnership by Ian Weaver who scored 70. Gresford also had a good day in the field with four catches and a run out with a direct hit from Craig Morse. Jimmy Williams was the star of the show however with his 2nd five-fer of the season. Scorecard

Friendly v Fenns Bank (A) - After Bersham had cancelled the friendly we were grateful to Fenns Bank who had also had a cancellation and offered us a game. Bowling first saw the return of ex-Wales leg spinner of Alex Ellwood, who by the end of his spell had found good rhythm and confidence. Joe Benson also picked up two wickets as did Andy Thomas. Dave Mcarthy and son Matt with have to call it a draw as they took a wicket apiece. Fenns made it to 156 all out. In reply Father and Son Benson put on 41, with Joe scoring 35 before holing out at long off. Innings of the day came from Dave Baker who scored a quick 45 not out to see Gresford over the line. Also, well done to Owen Walker whose cover drive got the loudest cheer of the day!

Scorecard

July 30th. Both 1sts and 2nds have matches called off after the pitch being deemed too wet after a morning shower. Gareth Rowland will skipper the first XI against Halkyn and Denbigh in the absence of Chris Ellwood who is away for the next two weeks.

August

7th August—1sts v Rhewl (A) - On a wet wicket Gresford lost openers Bell and Ellwood early on, however stand in skipper Gareth Rowland put Rhewl to the sword hitting 92 off 72 balls, he was well supported by Joe Benson who returned to form with a patient 42 not out. Late hitting from Sean Richards (35) took Gresford to 198/5 dec off 45 overs. In reply Rhewl lost regular wickets (Arthur Thomas 3-21, Sean Richards 2-39) until a partnership from Jon and Rob Eccles took Rhewl to within 60 runs, however John Bell (2-31) removed Jon Eccles for 71 to seal the win. Scorecard

2nds v Carmel (h) - After being put in on a wet wicket Gresford were thankful to Nicky Clare (42) and Rory Benson (26) in taking them to a score of 142 all out of 45 overs. Gareth Bell particularly thankful to his fielders as he recorded excellent figures of 12 overs 3 maidens 5 for 22. Jack Bunkell also chipped in with 2-12. Scorecard

10th August Midweek v Carmel (h) - Carmel returned to clappers lane for this promotion deciding division 8 clash. Batting first Carmel started well, however tidy bowling from the Gresford attack (Bell and Bunkell in particular) kept them to a below par 103 all out. A highlight was the tidy out-fielding of Henry Makins who also took a good catch. In reply an enthusiastic Carmel were soon silenced as they ran into an in form Gareth Rowland. Rowland struck numerous sixes and raced to 72 not out as Gresford won by 9 wickets. He was ably supported by Sean Richards (20odd no).

Thanks to Neil Benson for organising the team all season and best of luck for next season in division 7.

14th Aug 1sts home v Denbigh. After being put in on a wet track Gresford were pleased to find themselves 101/2 at the mid way point of the innings. Opener Joe Benson hit 29 and Gareth Rowland scored  his 3rd 50 in as many matches. However the introduction of the two Denbigh spinners produced an almighty collapse, Gresford slumping to 143 all out, 9 wickets falling to spin. In reply, Denbigh reached 100 without losing a wicket, and went on to win by 9 wickets. Arthur Thomas the pick of the bowlers. Scorecard

2nds away v Abergele—The 2nds continued their late season charge with a 10 wicket demolition of Abergele. At the toss the home captain, having previously suggested his team were really struggling with the bat, elected to bat. Jack Bunkell set the tone as he recorded the excellent figures of 6 over 4 maidens 2 for 4. Returning from injury Paddy Richards took 2 wickets and spin bowler Ross Willets accounted for four Abergele batsmen. In reply skipper Griffin (47*) and Richards (39*) ensured a 10 points to 0 result. Gresford move up to 4th, 21 points behind second place Bodedern with 4 fixtures remaining. Scorecard

Unfortunately Chirk couldn't raise a team for Sundays friendly fixture.

21.8.10 Halkyn vs 1sts

On a slow wet wk, Halkyn were invited to bat and eventually set a total of 143 for 5 off 52 overs, a total helped considerably by 26 extras of which 19 were wides (so 55 overs). G`ford`s reply never got going, good accurate Halkyn bowling and careless G`ford shots restricted the away side to 108 all. Only Gareth Rowland (32) and an 9th wk stand between the Richards brothers (Sean..33, Paddy..10) offered any resistance.

On a positive note Halkyn’s teas were by far the best we`ve had this year. Scorecard

2nds Vs Conwy

Gresford got off to a bright start with Cameron Murdoch and Steve Griffin punishing anything loose, however 4 quick wickets set the hosts back. It was up to Gareth Bell (36) and Jack Bunkell (21) to rebuild the innings with a solid partnership on what was a damp track. Late hitting from Dave Baker (28no) took Gresford to a respectable 151 for 9. In reply Conwy were squeezed from the start with only 50 runs on the board half way through the innings at drinks. Wickets were shared Cam (3) G. Bell (3) J.Bunkell (2) and Nicky Clare (2). Late hitting from the Conwy tail got them an extra point, going from 91-9 to 124 all out. Scorecard

Sunday v Upton (A)

Sunday saw a trip to Upton on the Wirral (or is that Chester?!?!) as a young Gresford team took on a Cheshire league side that included first and second team players as well as a Kiwi Pro. After losing the toss Gresford fielded first, the kiwi pro scoring 119 out of a total of 181/8. Matt Daulby bowled well taking 3 wickets. In reply, Gresford got off to a slow start, but more importantly did not lose early wickets, all to 4 batsmen reaching double figures. Simon Perry (53*) came in with Gresford needing 100 off the last 14 overs, but with the help of some stunning straight shots from Gareth Bell (20*) reached the total with 2 balls to spare. Scorecard

A fitting end to a good season, thanks to all the players who have made themselves available all season, it makes picking the team very easy!!

Bank Holiday Derby Matches 28th & 30th Aug

1st Team

Both games followed a remarkably similar pattern, G`ford batted first in each and both finished with winning draws for G`ford, Against M`weil, 153 all out was below par with Matty Cree dominating the scoring with 69. The away teams reply  eventually finished on 151 for 8 off 50 overs. Mondays game against Bersham saw more runs from G`ford, a 50+ opening stand, 90 for the 3rd wk and 60 for the 6th allowed G`ford to reach 235 for 6. ( Alex `Lippy ` Ellwood 68, Rowly 55 and an excellent quick fire 47 from Sean Richards), B`shams reply was rapid with 70 off the first 11 overs! Runs slowed and following the dismissal of captain Neil Thomas (for an excellent 114...ex G`ford player!,,,he really enjoyed his first league ton) the home side settled for the draw some 30+ runs short.

PS

Bersham lost regular wickets in reply, but kept up a healthy run rate throughout. They managed to get the runs with 2 wickets in hand, the bowling of Jack Bunkell (2 wickets) and Gareth Bell (3 wickets) was yet again a highlight.

2nds v Mochdre (A) The 2nd team were invited to bowl on a flat deck and a quick outfield and found the going difficult as Mochdre piled on 260 runs. Cameron Murdoch took 3 wickets for the away team. The Chairman`s day started early with the U15`s taking on St Asaph in the NE Wales regional final. St Asaph`s top order were restricted by good bowling from G Bell, C Evans and A Thomas (who also took 3 excellent catches). Late hitting got the away team upto 95. G`ford reply despite the early loss of C Evans started well with good knockes from H Makings (42no) and D Baker (20).A late flurry of wks cost the coach more hair loss (if this is possible), but the win was secured in the 19th over. Gresford now go on to represent NE Wales in the North Wales final against Llanrwst on Sunday 12th Sept at Mochdre.

Chairman`s Match....`Flinty Memorial Game`

Featured club players of all ages and a number of invited guests....a keenly fought game was played and apparantly resulted in a tie! The teas were excellent, the umpiring less so, highlight depended on your family loyalties!

Good to see the Formstone family at such an event.

Saturday 11th—2nds v Connahs Quay (H)

Undefeated division 4 champions Connahs Quay came to clappers lane for the final league game of the campaign. After winning the toss (finally) and putting the opposition in Gresford bowled tightly, keeping the Quay to just 60/4 after 23 overs. However, some good hitting from the Quay’s middle order saw them to a highly competitive 177. Credit must go Patrick Richards and Cameron Murdoch who bowled tightly. April
Net sessions for seniors and juniors at Ruabon have been well attended and the good early season weather allowed a mixed team to be entertained by
St Asaph in a pre season friendly. The hosts batting first scoring 220 for 7. Seven bowlers were used with the highlight being the dismissal of the Aussie pro by the Richard brothers partnership (ct Sean, b Paddy). G`ford`s reply started well with both openers scoring 40 ish (Alex at pains to point out that he scored 1 more than his ageing partner), eventually to reach 180 for 7 off 45 overs.

The Ladies section has had a series of training sessions at the ClubHouse.....bowling, fielding and batting has been practised as well as nights out and cricket kit fashions being discussed.

The square...has it ever looked so good at this time of year and we have new machinery to help keep it that way.

.....and a good (and profitable) night was had by all at the annual pre season Race Night.

April 24th and the firsts travel to Llay and come away with their best win here in years. The home side were bowled out for 147 with all four bowlers sharing the wickets after good spells by all. Sean Richards was perhaps the pick of the bunch. In reply an opening stand of 112 ensured a good 26pts to 2 win. Alex Ellwood`s 84 dominated, supported by Bell`s 30 ish. SCORECARD
The seconds made the long trip to Bodedern and came away with just 1 point. The young bowling attack tired in the Ynys Mon sunshine and eventually conceded
220 plus runs. In reply only skipper Steve Griffin got going with a determined 40 Better will come from this young (mainly!) side. SCORECARD

May
May 1st Vs Northop 1sts. Cold and overcast. G`ford batted first and reached 50 without loss for the first wicket and then 80 for 6! Skipper Ellwood then took over with an excellent 57 well supported by Paddy Richards. The entertainment was then provided by `Daddy` Richards quickfire 32. G`ford eventually reached 165. In reply Northop had reached 48 for 3 when continuous drizzle forced an early end.
Running between the wickets will be an interesting topic for conversation in the Richards` household for sometime we think!
