27th June

Pwllheli (H)

A Pwllheli perspective....

Dashing Duffy surpassed by grafting Griffin

With Dabson losing a crucial toss on a wet wicket, Gresford opening bowler Nicky Clare ran riot grabbing the first four Pwllheli batsmen, three caught behind, in a spell of 12 overs for just 15 runs as he varied his pace cleverly and left the wicket to do the rest. From 42 for 6, the sun was doing its work as the later batsmen put on 73 for the last 3 wickets with Taylor (15) supporting the dashing Andy Duffy (33 from 37 balls).

Captain Dabson asked for 100 at the start and was pleased with the recovery to 115 from the full 45 overs. With the sun beating down in humid conditions, the Gresford reply was largely untroubled as the Pwllheli bowlers struggled to get the same life out of the wicket. Reliable Glyn Hughes was the best conceeding only 13 runs from 8 accurate overs. However, opener Steve Griffin was the immovable rock and batted throughout hitting the odd hard-hit boundary to see the table-toppers home to maintain their 9 point average per game.

In the Legion bar afterwards captain Dabson was pleased with the batting recovery and lamented on several airial shots just missing our fielders. "Gresford are a strong all-round side certain to win promotion this year, but the game may have been closer if the conditions were equal."

Keith Dabson - 28/06/2009

8th Aug

Halkyn (H)

What is it about Steve Griffin and 101!!! Together with good contributions from Ian Weaver (38) and the somewhat younger Rory Benson (21) and Ross Willets (27), G`fords total of 231 for 4 was always going to be too much for Halkyn....they were then reduced to 63 all out in just 25 overs....spinners Rory and Ross sharing 7 wks

25th April

Llay (a)

Lost by 8 wickets! After a good opening stand of 96 (Alex Ellwood 67, John Bell 34) wickets followed quickly and only a quickfire 28no from Mike Richards took Gresford to an reasonable  168. In reply Llay passed our score in the 44th over....but not as easily as it looks. Paddy Richards being the pick of the bowlers, but all bowling without luck

PS

What a young team...with apologies to JB, MR and perhaps NC!

2nd May

Llangollen (H)

After being put in G`ford reached 186, thanks largely to Chris Ellwoods excellent 88. In reply Llan were dismissed for 92 ( J Bell 4 for 24 and P Richards 3 for 28)

Alex Ellwoods boundary marking makes him a front runner for the `brick` already!!!

9th May

Rhewl (A)

After fielding in the drizzle for 45 overs during which Rhewl scored 200 for 8 ( Paddy Richards 3 for 21). The sun came out at tea and on a drying wicket the batting failed badly to be all out for 125 ( Chris Ellwood top scoring with 32)....disappointing.

16th May

Llandudno (A)

At a very cold, wet and windy Oval G`ford struggled to 149 all out, J Bell top scoring with 54. In reply Llandudno passed our total for the loss of just 2 wks..but in the penultimate over. Not enough runs!

23rd May

Brymbo (H)

After bowling Brymbo out for just 61 it took just 14 overs to pass their score for the loss of 2 wks, Joe Benson starring with a quickfire 37no

30th May

Denbigh (A)

A tie!  195 runs each.....needing 20 runs to win off the last over and 9 wks down, 16 year old Paddy Richards and Andrew Thomas (14) somehow managed to scramble 19 having saved the game batting out the last 5 overs. Earlier Gareth Rowland (43) and Joe Benson (48) had dominated G`ford`s scoring.

6th June

Northop (H)

It had to happen.....rain and more rain. Game off.

13th June

M`weil/Wxm (A)

After bowling and fielding well to restrict M`weil to 184 off 48 overs, G`ford`s reply started well with 90+ for the first wk (A Ellwood 60 and J Bell 25), G Rowland (55) continued the good start but from 132 for 2 wks fell rapidly until last wk pair took G`ford to a (great) 1 wk win. Ali`s huge 6 to win the match was really special.

20th June

Bersham (H)

After opting to bat Bersham went from 83 for 3 to 130 all out. G`ford`s good bowling and fielding was highlighted by Joe Bensons brilliant catch and J Bells 3 wks for 23 off 13 overs. The home side reached B`sham`s total for the loss of just 1 wk. Alex Ellwood led the reply with 62no supported by Bell (39) and G Rowland (25) which included two monster 6`s

27th June

St Asaph (A)

After being put in on a damp track, G`ford struggled to 97 all out with nine batsmen being caught out...mainly in front of the wk.  Gareth Rowlands (34) was the only highlight. In reply St Asaph took 46 overs for the loss of 3 wks to pass our total. Mike Gronnow`s return was encouraging....(12 overs 1 for 30 and 14 runs...3 stylish boundaries)

4th July

Pwllheli (H)

A losing draw.....Pwll got off to a good start reaching 63 for the first wk in just 15 overs. At 122 fo3 off 35 G`ford then pulled them back, after a rain break Pwll hit a further 80  off the last 10 overs. In reply wks fell regularly and the home side never really threatened despite good knocks from Joe Benson (31), Arthur Thomas (26) and (a slow) 52no from John Bell

11th July

Llay (H)

With 20 runs needed off 10 overs and with 3 wks inhand G`ford looked favourites to win...and then it rained....grrrrrr.

Llay made a very positive reaching 50 without loss off the first 10 overs. The home side did well to restrict to 201 after this start. The reply started badly but an excellent innings from Joe Benson (74) who received good support from Arthur Thomas (24) and Richard Eccles (37no) almost took G`ford to victory.

18th July

LLangollen (A)

Llangollen have withdrawn from the League....no game

25th July

Rhewl (H)

Having been put in on a wet slow pitch Rhewl must have been delighted to reach 185 off 48 overs....J Bell`s 6 wks being matched by the number of 6`s hit off him (almost). Rhewl delight continued as G`ford lost three wks cheaply ..then Gareth Rowland dominated the reply with a brilliant 115no, good support was given by Arthur Thomas (40no)

1st Aug

Llandudno (H)

Although it was a nice day the previous weeks rain meant that their was no chance of getting this game on!

8th Aug

Brymbo (A)

Farrukh Ali  (5wks) and Sean Richards (3 wks) skittled Brymbo for just 113 in 42 overs..ably supported by 4 catches by keeper Morris. It took G`ford just 19 overs to pass the home sides total.....Alex Ellwood, Chris Ellwood and in form Arthur Thomas all scoring 20+ in a 6 wk win

15th Aug

Denbigh (H)

An excellent bowling and fielding performance with all 5 bowlers sharing the wks restricted Denbigh to 101 for 9. Alex Ellwood`slip catch was particularly memorable. G`ford passed the D`bigh total for the loss of just 3 wks. Arthur Thomas`s good form continues with  41no

22nd Aug

Northop (A)

Bad day all round. Starting with just 9 men and only one pace bowler, Northop got off to a quick start eventually to reach 234 for 3. The reply never got going eventually to be all out for 131. Two pluses from the game, Ross Willets bowling debut at this level and David Bakers batting at the end of the innings...both Under 15 players

29th Aug

M`weil/Wxm (H)

At 40 for 5 (incl 3 LBW`s!) a good score seemed unlikey. An excellent 104 stand between Craig Morse (61), his maiden 1st team 50 and Sean Richards (33) allowed G`ford to set 169 for 8 in 45 overs. In reply M`wiel passed this total for the loss of just 1 wk in 47 overs. Such a score did in no way reflect the bowling effort, in particular the 12 overs bowled by Arthur Thomas.

31st Aug

Bersham (A)

With an average age of 20 (17 if you exclude the capt) this young side were denied a possible good win by the rain. After being put in, an opening stand of 129 by John Bell (61) and Arthur Thomas (64) and a quickfire 33 from Craig Morse allowed G`ford to declare at 193 for 5 off 45 overs. At 22 for 2 (ex catches by Ollie Morris and Simon Perry off Sean Richards) after 6.5 overs and with both overseas players out G`ford were favourites and then it rained.....end of game

5th Sept

St Asaph (H)

St Asaph win the League with a 50 run victory. Their Aussie pro dominated the scoring with 102no, the home side to their credit bowled and fielded well with Rory Benson claiming his first senior wk. In reply G`ford reached 150 thanks to good knocks from Joe Benson and Sean Richards in particular.... and a hard hitting 15 no from number 11 Matt Daulby

13th Sept

Pwllheli (A)

G`ford lost the early wicket of Arthur Thomas, then folllowed a stand of 160 runs between Bell and Rowlands, Bell ....you might find it difficult to believe was first to get his 50....was out for 73, Rowland`s 107no featured a second 50 off just 31 balls (with 5 sixes), a truly excellent innings. The away side declaring on 208 for 2 in 45 overs. Pwll`s reply started positively (56 for 1) with Rowland and Sean Richard bowling well with little luck. Wks started to fall when Bell and (demon) Matt Daulby came on sharing 26 overs for 69 runs and taking 5 wks. Pwll eventually held on for a draw as the limped to 138 for 7 off 55 overs. .........Sean and Gareth were delighted with Joe Benson`s bowling contribution...1-0-1-1

26th May (6.15 start)

Les Tunnah Trophy 1st Rd

Overton (A)

2nd Rd vs Llay....2nd July (A)

Overton conceded..first time we`ve got through to the second round in this competition! Against Llay Gresford raced to 152 off their 20 overs with all batsmen contributin. In reply Llay struggled initially especially as the Richard`s brothers tied them down. Llay reply eventually fell 11 runs short.

The finals were due to be held at Bersham on the 19th July with G`ford facing Chirk in one semi-final ....Pontblyddyn take on Buckley in the other semi-final.....but it rained all day.
Final day.....  the 20th Sept
Pont narrowly beat Buckley (late replacement for Mold) in the first semi final. G`ford started badly in the second semi and it then got worse, being bowled out for 70 which Chirk passed for the loss of 4 wks
The final saw 360+ runs scored off 32 overs with Chirk winning a thrilling game in the last over
.......at least we have now won a game in this competition!

24th May

Castell Alun (A)

A low scoring affair at Castell Alun, with Matt Daulby and Paddy Richards top scoring in G`fords 107 all out. Ian Crumplins 2 wks for 11 runs off 5 overs could not stop C Alun passing G`fords total for the loss of just 4 wks in the 35th over

31st May

Kirkdale (H)

A game of 200+ runs aside with G`ford losing in the last over. Alex Ellwood may have top scored with 65 (retired tired) but the outstanding (memorable at least) innings must be the 35 runs scored by Colin Murdoch in his debut friendly match.......to Cam and Fraser..FOLLOW THAT!

14th June

Knockin (A)

Another narrow defeat for Perry`s team but a good game. In their 40 overs G`ford reached 193 for 8 with good knocks from A. Ellwood (50 ret), Neil Benson (39), Joe B (....16 less than dad!) and Ollie Morris (28). In reply Knockin passed our total for the loss of 8 wks.

21st June

Fenn`s Bank (A)

What a game this  was, They got 232 off forty overs. Skipper Simon Perry bowled spin at the death (short and rubbish..his words) and went for 23
in an over, then switched to pace and took a hatrick! Father and son Williams bowled well. We didnt have much batting...the capt said..
but after an opening stand of 90 from Cameron Murdoch and Arthur Thomas we were in with a chance. Arthur got 52 and Cameron departed with 12 needed off the final 2 overs after an absolutely stunning 98, shots all around the ground. Needed 3 to win off the last ball and
Matt Daulby got stumped. Another thriller.

28th June

Knockin (H)

Good bowling from Matt Daulby, Jack Bunkill and Andy Dodd restricted Knockin to a modest total which was passed by G`ford for the loss of 6 wks. Chris Ellwood`s 50 off just 9 overs the feature. Praise also to Henry Makins who batted well.

(the captain suggested that Sean should stick to his pace bowling....Knockin however were grateful for his generous offspin!)

5th July

Chirk (A)

Batting was dominated by the more `senior` players with Neil Benson retiring on 58no.....twice Rory`s score!...and Neil Ellwood`s 29. Chirk were all out for 130, 50 short of G`ford`s total. Wks were shared amongst the bowlers until skipper Perry decided to finish matters with 3 quick wks for just 2 runs

12th July

Malpas (A)

Malpas called it off ...only got 6 players!!!

26th July

Chirk (H)

Too wet....game off

9th Aug

Malpas (H)

For the second time this year Malpas called off the game late on Sat...well done to Simon for concocting an impromptu inter club game....and to those who contributed to the teas

Phil Formstone Memorial Match

Cricket match honours Wrexham club stalwart

Published date: 26 August 2009 | Published by: Staff reporter

Evening Leader

1 of 2 A SPECIAL cricket match has taken place to celebrate the life of one of Gresford Cricket Club's  stalwarts who died in a tragic accident.Phil Formstone, 46, known to friends as “Flinty”, was a mechanical engineer for Arriva and died in January in an incident at the Oswestry bus depot where he worked.A colleague spotted him under a bus and alerted emergency services. But it was too late to save the father-of-one who lived with his parents, Eirian and Walter, in Narrow Lane, Gresford, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His untimely death cast a long shadow over team-mates at Gresford Cricket Club, which he served with distinction for many years, and on Sunday a special match was held in his honour at the club’s ground.Players, both past and present, either watched or played in the match, which took the form of a Twenty20 encounter, and many family members and friends turned up to take part in this very special event.Club secretary John Bell, who kept wicket for one of the teams, said the whole afternoon showed in how much affection their former colleague had been held.He added: “I am absolutely sure Flinty would have approved of our efforts to celebrate his life and although we remembered his death with great sadness, we all recounted tales of the joy and fun he had brought to the club. We will always miss him.”The first over of the match was bowled by Flinty’s 11-year-old son, Adam, who also opened the batting for his team, and although no-one really bothered about the final result a good time was had by all.Former Gresford player John Stockton, who had travelled some distance to take part in the game, said: “I felt privileged to have played in this special game."Flinty was a fine cricketer and a great character, who always kept us smiling – there will never be anyone else like him.”At the end of the afternoon a collection was made for the Air Ambulance service, one of Mr Formstone’s favourite charities.

Llay (H)

Two superb hundreds dominated this game. The first by Gareth Rowland (123...14x4`s and 4x6`s) helped G`ford to 229 for 9 , J Bell surported with 47. In reply Llay reached 235 for 5 with John Parry scoring 100 (8x6`s)  16 x 6`s in the match!!

Good to see Les Lever in a white coat, rather than being chased by men in them!

21st June

Brymbo (A)

November has returned......game off

28th June

Northop (H)

Unique....firstly we batted for 52 overs in this League with G Rowland top scoring with an excellent 86 runs and secondly they passed our score without losing a wk .....and despite comments to the contrary the author feels we did`nt bowl that badly......they simply did`nt give us a chance! Well done their openers.

5th July

Rhewl (A)

Somebody should read the rulebook....we may then have won! Rhewl managed 190 for 6 dec in 51 overs including a rain break. For some reason we ended up with just 43 overs, we reached 160 for 6. C Ellwood 60 and a happy Richard Eccles 22no......8 points each and a well deserved slap on the wrist from the League

12th July

Marchwiel (A)

Whilst bowling well..with S Richards at his best so far this season..M`weil still managed to set 200. In reply we never got going, to slump to 80 all out, only  J Cree (29) batting with any authority

19th July

Chirk (H)

220 for 6 dec off 45 overs with A Ellwood leading with 66 with good support from the middle order ( incl M Gronnow 36 off 15 balls)....you would of thought that this would at least given us a chance.. Chirk got it for 2 wks in just 31 overs.

26th July

Llandudno (H)

A win....after been put in G`ford reached 176 fot 9..should perhaps have been more. C Ellwood (42) & J Bell (33) top scored  with good knocks from young Thomas and Richards. James Cree added a useful 30 at the end of the innings. After a good start Dudno`s reply faltered due to good accurate bowling from Sajid (2wks) and Mike ( Dibbly) Gronnow (2) with J Bell claiming 4 wks to complete a 36 run win

Richard Eccles should be congratulated on his satorial elegance as well as his umpireing

2nd Aug

Denbigh (A)

After bowling the home side out for 148 (Bell 6 for 34)....first time they have been all out this season... G`ford`s batting disappointed with only Bell and Joe Benson passing 20. The LBW`s did`nt help but we were a little niave especially against the (young) left arm spin bowler. Lost by 28 runs

9th Aug

Llangollen (H)

RAIN...game off

16th Aug

Northop (A)

Best forgotten....40 all out, they then got it in 8 overs for 1 wk.....oops

23rd Aug

On a wet wk and outfield 170 seemed an ok score. 5 bats got 20+ (J Bell 27, J Cree 21, M Gronnow 20 with the highlight a 55 7th wk partnership between M Richards (32no) and Saj Hussain (29no). G`ford were seemingly in charge until it rained (too heavy to play in but we did!!) Rhewl got away and won in 44 overs!

(we all owe R Eccles an apology...)

25th Aug

Lost but a much better performance from a relatively inexperienced team. Llay`s strong batting side were restricted to 200 for 9, Bell taking 4 wks and Arthur Thomas bowling starman Parry. Andy Dodd once again taking the catch of the day. In reply G`ford were 169 all out after being 162 for 5  Bell (32) and the Ellwoods (20+) scored well but pride of place goes to R Eccles scoring his first 50 for the club

A little too much rain at Corwen this week!
